Updating Your Hair For Summer: Blonde Balayage

I've heard it through the grape vine that blondes have more fun. So this summer I've decided to test this theory and I therefore introduce to you a blonder Gemma. Apologies in advance for the selfie spam. As someone with quite naturally dark hair I've always avoided colouring my roots which is why for a few years now I've opted for balayage as means of colouring my hair.  For those who are unfamiliar, balayage is a technique for highlighting hair in which the dye is painted on in such a way as to create a graduated, natural looking effect. I've alway favoured this over ombré because personally I've always found this too blocky.

I'll be completely honest with you here. Before my hair appointment, I was really unhappy with the overall look of my hair especially when worn naturally. Specifically the colour. Personally, it looked streaky, brassy and rather than being a lovely ashy blonde it looked almost yellow. I've previously had balayage at Blue Tit and Myla and Davis but never at LIVE TRUE LONDON so I was definitely looking forward to trying out their hair services. For the purpose of this post I have included a before and after photo which you can see above. A lot lighter wouldn't you agree?

Any girl will know the power of a good blow-dry and how amazing you generally feel when you are happy with your hair. Girl to girl, I would never tell you to visit somewhere to get your hair done unless I genuinely thought it was worthwhile and left feeling happy myself. So as it goes, this post is as honest as humanly possible.

Last week I was invited down to the Live True London Salon in Clapham to test out their hair services. The lovely Mattia (pictured in a sneaky Boomerang below) worked his magic on my hair and three and a half hours later I had a much lighter, blonder looking balayage. Before my appointment, I had to visit the salon for a patch test which LIVE TRUE LONDON will do if you are a new client. After speaking to Mattia, I knew the sort of colour I had in mind. I even showed him a photo of a gorgeous beach blonde babe I found on an evening scroll on Instagram and knew I wanted to go lighter, particularly for summer.

A little bit about the specifics just in case you wanted to know what I had done. Mattia applied bleach to my hair free hand, blending as he went to create the most natural 'sun kissed' look. After having an Olaplex treatment which is advisable for anyone colouring their hair, I also had a toner applied in shade EQ. LIVE TRUE LONDON use Redken products in their salon and the shampoo and conditioner from their 'extreme' range was used on the day on my hair. As a result, I was left with silky smooth hair and it was also a nice change as believe it or not I have never actually used any Redken products before. I definitely need to invest when my shampoo and conditioner run out I know that much.

Would I recommend the service? 100%. Located under the arches, a stones throw from Clapham North tube station this salon is interior goals thats for sure. I genuinely am so happy with my colour especially how soft and natural it looks considering how light it is compared to my natural hair colour. You can often get that streaky, blocky look which was definitely what I was looking to avoid and I couldn't be happier with the end result. The perfect hair colour for summer if you ask me and I genuinely left feeling totally satisfied.

  1. It looks amazing! I'm desperate to get my hair sorted out because it's just horrible at the moment from dying it for years and then randomly stopping about a year and a half ago, so I'm wondering if balayage might be an option to sort of blend the two tones together in a more natural way.

    1. You should definitely try balayage Sophie. It's the only colouring technique I'll use on my hair and I find it a lot more gentle too. x
